Sandu explained that she held a high position in Romania's former Communist regime and directed the country's economic program

Top Romanian economist Dr. Steliana Sandu shared her life experience-from working for the regime of former Communist dictator Nikolai Ceaucescu to serving her country as a Seventh-day Adventist Christian-during an interview at the Adventist World Session in Toronto.

Sandu explained that she held a high position in Romania’s former Communist regime and directed the country’s economic program, teaching at the prestigious Institute of Economics in Bucharest. With Communism’s fall in 1990 she began searching for a better way of life, and adopted vegetarianism. “I was so sick from drinking and eating a lot of pork,” she explains. “Once I gave up alcohol and meat I felt so much better. So when I heard about Adventists and their health emphasis I knew they were talking a lot of truth.”

With no Bibles available under communism, Sandu says she had much to learn. “Before I was convinced there was no God-I was a complete atheist,” she says. “I just lived for money and social status. Now that I know Christ I have a much happier and more peaceful life.”

Nor has she lost out in her career. “Through my experience with God, I have gained so much, and in my work I am even more successful,” she comments. “I explain the Bible’s approach to life to my students in each course on economics, because verses like the parables of Jesus teach important economic truths.”
