102-Year-Old Adventist Woman in Brazil Participates in the Caleb Mission Project

“When I saw those young people going up ahead, I thought it was the most beautiful thing. Then, I called the pastor, asked for a T-shirt, and said, 'I also want to be Caleb!'" states Dona Nilza Rodrigues.

The Caleb Mission project is known for mobilizing young people during their vacations to carry out social and missionary activities in various communities. However, this was not an obstacle for Nilza Rodrigues. At the age of 102, she decided to participate in the initiative and did so through intercessory prayers.

Despite her advanced age, the retiree says she wanted to help in some way. The decision happened in a celebration of the Caleb volunteers in the state of Ceará. "When I saw those young people going there, I thought it was the most beautiful thing. Then I called the pastor, asked for a T-shirt, and said, 'I want to be a Caleb, too!” Rodrigues explains.

The team of volunteers from the church Rodrigues attends held, during an 18-day-span, evangelism and visitation of Bible students. As she could not accompany the group in the activities because of her weaknesses, she stayed at home praying for those interested.

"My mother has always been involved in church things. She is currently a little weakened, but she still wanted to participate. She is an inspiration to me and to those who somehow feel they can't or won't help. This year, I learned that it doesn't matter how old you are; there is a need to do something for God as long as you have life," emphasizes José Aurinelson, son of Rodriques.

Rodriques' experience with Caleb Mission has inspired many people in the state. Because of this, she received a plaque honoring her for her volunteer prayer service. Pastor Marcos Militão, president of the Adventist Church in Ceará, held the moment of recognition and gratitude.

"She is proof that there is no age limit to do something for God—to go and seek other people for the kingdom and to intercede. At 102 years old, she is still seeking to be useful to people and to the church. Her performance is an example that invites us to do something for God while we can," Militão points out.

The project in the community ended with four baptisms and a promise: "Next year, I will participate again," says Rodriques.
