Recalling the beginnings of his ministry 35 years ago, evangelist Alejandro Bullón will travel to 24 Peruvian cities in 13 days this month as part of a second annual outreach effort known as “La Caravana de la Esperanza,” or, “The Caravan of Hope.” Upwards of 50,000 new believers are expected to join the Seventh-day Adventist Church during the cross-country effort.

The traveling evangelistic outreach will begin July 6 in the city of San Martin de Pangoa where Bullón, an Adventist pastor, started in ministry in 1969.

The Caravan of Hope is an integrated traveling outreach program involving various church institutions including universities, high schools, hospitals, radio and television facilities, as well as the Peruvian office of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency.

According to Peruvian church officials, local church members and pastors have been studying for nearly six months with those who are interested in learning more about the Adventist Christian faith. Event organizers hope those who have been studying will be baptized as Bullón and the “Caravan” visit their city.

“Our goal is to baptize no less than 50,000 people,” declares Pastor Orlando Ramos, secretary of the Adventist church in Peru. “This can only be realized with the power of God being manifested in the lives of the thousands of people that are learning and will accept Jesus as their personal savior, in addition to the commitment of hundreds of volunteers whom we have called ‘Gideons.’ They are responsible for teaching the Bible, step by step, to all the people that will give themselves to Jesus when the Caravan of Hope passes through.”

“Without doubt there is great emotion as we participate in the Caravan of Hope,” says Pastor Melchor Ferreyra, president of the church in Peru. “The program is allowing the Adventist Church to have a strong impact in the cities through which the Caravan will pass, in addition to expectations that we have in other parts of Peru and the world.”

The Caravan’s program will also include free medical care. The Good Hope Clinic, an Adventist hospital in suburban Lima, will provide members of their health care staff to attend to hundred’s of people in the 24 cities.

“There are over 10 of us physicians that are committed to this work and it will be our privilege to be able to participate in the ‘Caravan of Hope,’” says Dr. Hemiliano Contreras, director of the Good Hope Clinic.

The massive traveling evangelistic effort will be broadcast live every night on the Red Nuevo Tiempo television network and La Voz de la Esperanza Internacional radio network throughout Peru and Latin America.

The first edition of the Caravan outreach program, known as “The Caravan of Power,” traveled through the Lake Titicaca and Southern Peruvian regions in September 2003. The first effort yielded 4,655 baptisms.
