On August 20, 2025, Maplehurst Correctional Complex in Ontario, Canada, held its first large-scale, full-immersion baptism service, during which 89 inmates publicly declared their faith.

The baptisms were organized through the work of the facility’s chaplaincy team and volunteers, including those involved in prison ministries.

For many years, only a small number of baptisms had taken place at Maplehurst. Earlier in 2025, an inmate in the facility’s infirmary who had been studying the Bible with volunteer Elizabeth Gordon requested baptism after deciding to commit his life to God.

With guidance from the institution’s chaplain, Gordon assisted in the baptism. Chaplaincy leaders say the moment helped inspire renewed spiritual interest among inmates.

Institutional management also addressed logistical challenges that had previously limited the ability to conduct baptisms within the facility.

Continued baptisms and growing interest

Following the August service, additional baptisms took place as other inmates expressed interest in publicly declaring their faith.

On September 22, another 36 inmates were baptized, followed by 13 additional baptisms on October 14.

Chaplaincy leaders say Bible study groups in the facility’s chapels have increasingly focused on the meaning of baptism and the role it plays in Christian faith. Spiritual conversations between chaplains and inmates have also increased.

Some inmates who had not previously participated in chaplaincy programs are now attending Bible studies and engaging in faith-based activities, according to chaplaincy volunteers.

Challenges and future plans

Additional baptisms have been requested by inmates, although colder weather during the fall months has created logistical challenges for conducting immersion baptisms outdoors, with temperatures often falling below 10°C (50°F).

Chaplaincy leaders say they hope a long-term solution can be developed to allow baptisms to continue as an ongoing part of spiritual care within the facility.

Despite these challenges, chaplains and volunteers report that the recent baptisms have contributed to renewed interest in spiritual life among inmates at Maplehurst Correctional Complex.
