The Berlin Waldfriede Adventist Hospital is celebrating its 105th anniversary since its founding. Bestselling author Corina Bomann has chronicled the hospital’s history in her account of its centennial development, highlighting the challenges and turning points the institution has experienced over the decades.

"When we stop and look back, we are filled with great gratitude for the guidance that God has given Waldfriede,” said Martin Knoll, spokesperson and chaplain of the hospital.

The clinic recently completed a comprehensive restructuring process, prompted by rising operational costs, the lasting impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and approximately 15 million euros in unreimbursed medical services—due to treating more patients than anticipated under the city’s healthcare plan. These factors placed significant financial pressure on the hospital.

Under the leadership of CEO Bernd Quoss, and with support from the hospital board and the Inter-European Division (EUD) of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, the administration pursued a protective shield procedure. The Berlin court approved this legal process following detailed evaluations. It allows temporary financial relief, including full coverage of staff wages for three months by the employment office, while imposing strict conditions for restructuring and requiring a sound economic outlook.

“In three months' time, these measures will undergo meticulous review,” explained Quoss. He continued, “Recently, all creditors and relevant courts have unanimously acknowledged the efficacy of these strategies, expressing optimism for the future. Local newspapers and media outlets have celebrated this turnaround with headlines proclaiming, "Waldfriede is saved…!"

Quoss credits the hospital’s staff for their dedication during the restructuring phase. Thanks to coordinated leadership, Waldfriede is working to maintain its reputation among the world’s leading hospitals by 2025.

Quoss credited the hospital staff for their commitment throughout the restructuring process. “The love of God and humanity is our driving force in all our endeavors. We aspire to provide each patient with the highest standard of medical care, guided by our Christian values,” he said. “We remain mindful that every success and all the good accomplished within these walls is ultimately due to God’s grace.”
