The heavy rains that have hit the state of Rio Grande do Sul have left 43 dead and 46 missing as of Sunday morning, September 10, 2023, according to information from the Civil Defense. In the midst of this adversity, the Brazil chapter of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), a helping hand in emergency situations, is expanding its relief efforts in the region and, on Sunday, September 10, received international reinforcement.
The ADRA Uruguay truck arrived in Encantado, one of the affected regions. It is carrying Uruguay's Mobile Laundry Unit (UML), launched in 2022, which has two industrial washing and drying machines, each capable of handling 16 kilograms (approx. 35 pounds) of clothes per load. This unit was designed to respond to crises and will now find its practical application in the midst of the disaster in Rio Grande do Sul.
"Since our arrival, we have seen that the scale of the disaster is overwhelming. Our efforts, although significant, still seem small in the face of the situation. However, every gesture, every helping hand is a light in the lives of those affected," says Daniel Fritoli, ADRA's director in Rio Grande do Sul.
On Saturday, September 9, approximately 300 ADRA volunteers were working in the region, with ongoing activities planned for the whole week. ADRA has collaborated directly with Civil Defense, the Fire Department, and other local authorities, becoming a reference point for aid in the region.

Installed in Encantado, the UML has the capacity to process around 700 kilograms (over 1,500 pounds) of clothes a day, operating 24 hours a day. With the laundry fully operational, ADRA volunteers will be able to focus on other emergency needs, such as distributing hygiene and cleaning kits, mattresses, and water.
"We are grateful for the opportunity to serve and to be able to count on reinforcements like UML. Together, we can make a difference in people's lives and soften the impact of this disaster," Fritoli concludes.
