Recent discussions on social inclusion recently took center stage in Belgrade, Serbia, where participants from across Europe convened for the ADRA Conference on Roma and Homelessness. This event aimed to strengthen partnerships that restore dignity, belonging, and opportunity for marginalized communities. ADRA is the humanitarian arm of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Conference Overview

The three-day conference, hosted by ADRA Serbia, brought together representatives from over ten countries, including ADRA offices, government officials, faith-based leaders, and community experts. The focus was on addressing the pressing issue of exclusion faced by Roma and homeless individuals. The overarching message resonated throughout the event: every individual deserves respect, dignity, and a chance to thrive.

Participants engaged in meaningful dialogue about the root causes of exclusion, such as inadequate housing, lack of education, discrimination, and trauma. They also explored practical, faith-based approaches to fostering integration and self-reliance within these communities.

Key Insights and Speakers

Prominent speakers from various organizations, including the European Union, ADRA Europe, Friedensau Adventist University, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and local community organizations, emphasized the urgency of developing sustainable, long-term, community-based solutions. These solutions must prioritize the agency of the individuals involved and aim for their integration beyond mere immediate assistance.

Plamena Halacheva from the EU Delegation to Serbia highlighted this sentiment, stating, “Social inclusion is not just a policy goal but a shared European value — to live with dignity and opportunity.” João Martins, Director of ADRA Europe, echoed this call to action, urging attendees to view Roma and homeless individuals not merely as “categories” but as neighbors and members of society deserving of respect and support.

Practical Application

Field visits in and around Belgrade showcased the tangible impact of compassion in action. Participants observed initiatives such as Roma families striving for education and livelihoods, alongside ADRA Serbia’s Drumodom project, which provides integrated support for people experiencing homelessness. This initiative offers essential services, including hygiene and sanitation support, healthcare, psychosocial assistance, and housing resources.

Throughout the conference, participants identified key priorities: fostering stronger partnerships, promoting shared learning, and ensuring sustainable funding to empower communities in their efforts to overcome poverty.

Commitment to Change

The final statement adopted by all participants reaffirmed a collective commitment to social justice and inclusion. It read:

“We believe that everyone deserves respect, dignity, and a chance to thrive. As ADRA, we are committed to cooperative initiatives that promote the self-reliance of Roma and homeless individuals. Together, we will share knowledge, best practices, develop joint projects, and secure funding for community-based interventions that address the root causes of exclusion and poverty. Our collaboration will amplify impact, enhance advocacy, and promote a shared vision of social justice and inclusion.”

A Call to Action

ADRA leaders believe, "The call to action is clear: justice, compassion, and love compel us to create communities where no one is invisible. Every individual should have a place to belong and a pathway to thrive. Embracing this vision is essential for fostering a more inclusive society for all."
