Sydney Adventist Hospital (the San) has become the first hospital in New South Wales, Australia, to perform Mako robotic-assisted shoulder surgery.

The landmark procedure was successfully carried out on April 15, 2026, by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Marcus Chia, introducing technology already widely used in hip and knee replacements into shoulder surgery for the first time in the state.

The Mako SmartRobotics system uses advanced 3D CT-based planning and real-time robotic guidance to support highly accurate implant positioning while protecting healthy bone and soft tissue. The technology has been used in millions of hip and knee procedures globally and is associated with improved surgical precision and long-term outcomes.

Chia said extending the technology to the shoulder represents an important step forward in enhancing precision, safety, and quality of life for patients.

“Robotic-assisted shoulder surgery may offer improved joint stability, function, and range of motion, along with reduced postoperative pain and faster recovery,” Chia said.

“This technology allows for a highly personalized approach to surgery, supporting better outcomes and helping patients return to their everyday activities with greater confidence.”
