A major redevelopment is underway at Batuna Adventist Vocational School (BAVS), one of the most historically significant educational institutions in the Solomon Islands.

The redevelopment aims to transform the school into a high-quality, sustainable, and mission-focused vocational training center while preserving its rich Adventist heritage.

For more than a century since its establishment in the early 1920s, BAVS has played a pivotal role in the development of Adventist education and mission throughout the Solomon Islands. Originally founded as a training school for local missionaries and church workers, BAVS grew into a center of learning, health services, printing, and community development that contributed significantly to the growth of the Seventh-day Adventist Church across the nation.

Over the years, BAVS has trained and graduated hundreds of skilled tradesmen and women who have gone on to serve not only the Solomon Islands but also neighboring countries such as Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, and Kiribati. Today, the school serves approximately 300 students and continues to play a vital role in providing vocational education and workforce development opportunities for young people.

Despite its rich history and significant contribution to education and mission, the school faces several challenges associated with aging infrastructure, limited training facilities, inadequate student accommodation, constrained technological resources, and the logistical difficulties of operating in a remote island environment. Increasing enrolment demand, evolving industry requirements, and the need for modern learning environments have highlighted the importance of a comprehensive redevelopment strategy.

The BAVS redevelopment plan seeks to address these challenges through a thorough assessment of current needs and the identification of strategic investment opportunities in infrastructure, technology, teaching and learning resources, student welfare, staff development, and institutional sustainability. The initiative aims to position BAVS as a leading Adventist vocational education institution that effectively prepares students for employment, entrepreneurship, community leadership, and Christian service while supporting the educational and developmental needs of the Solomon Islands.

Stakeholder consultations involving students, staff, church leaders, alumni, community representatives, government agencies, and development partners have been identified as a critical component of the planning process. From June 1–3, South Pacific Division (SPD) Education Director Elisapesi Manson led a team of education leaders to BAVS to conduct a comprehensive needs assessment of the school.

The assessment team included Trans Pacific Union Mission (TPUM) General Secretary Talonga Pita, Solomon Islands Mission Education Director Ferol Asa, and Associate Education Director Esther Tasa, TVET consultant Cherry Galo, and Friends of Batuna Group leader Glynn Lock. The consultations were designed to ensure that redevelopment priorities reflect local needs, community aspirations, national development priorities, and the long-term vision for Adventist education in the Solomon Islands and the wider Pacific.

Recent support from government agencies, development partners, Adventist Church entities, and Friends of Batuna has already begun addressing several redevelopment priorities. The Australia Pacific Training Coalition donated new marine equipment to improve accessibility and school administration. The Friends of Batuna group in Australia recently completed major renovations to a transit facility, providing much-needed accommodation during the redevelopment period.

On June 2, the New Zealand High Commission's second secretary, Sammy O’Hara, officially opened a new administration building at the school in partnership with Caritas Aotearoa. In addition, the SPD education department, in partnership with the TPUM and Solomon Islands Mission education departments, donated new internet infrastructure and multimedia equipment to support teaching, learning, and communication needs.

Further development is on the horizon, with plans underway for major renovations to the school kitchen and dining hall through funding support from the Solomon Islands government. The Batuna Board is scheduled to meet later in June to finalize funding strategies for the remaining redevelopment priorities.

Asa expressed confidence that the Board will foster broader collaboration among key stakeholders, including alumni, local churches, development partners, and Adventist Church entities. Such partnerships are seen as vital in advancing the redevelopment agenda and securing a sustainable future for BAVS as it continues its mission of preparing young people for service, employment and leadership.

“The school’s redevelopment reflects a shared commitment to strengthening Adventist education and expanding opportunities for future generations,” Manson said. “Sincere appreciation is extended to all Batuna stakeholders, alumni, church members, development partners, and supporters who have contributed to the school’s progress, including those whose generous donations and assistance are still forthcoming. Their partnership and investment are helping to secure a brighter future for Batuna and the young people it serves.”

Manson said education leaders are optimistic that a revitalized BATS will not only preserve an important part of Adventist heritage but also equip a new generation of Solomon Islanders with the skills, values, and leadership qualities needed to contribute meaningfully to their communities and the nation.

“As planning progresses, stakeholders remain united in their vision of seeing Batuna Adventist Vocational School once again become a leading center for vocational excellence, Christian service and community transformation in the Solomon Islands and throughout the Pacific region.”
