In the Solomon Islands, ADRA provides seeds to strengthen food security

Kukudu Adventist College received gardening supplies to provide food security and income through its agricultural program.

The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) provided agricultural tools and vegetable seeds to support Kukudu Adventist College in the Solomon Islands.

The donation included wheelbarrows, banana spades, nursery netting, watering cans, and a range of vegetable seeds. The resources are intended to strengthen food security during times of disaster while also helping the school generate income through its agricultural program.

ADRA also provided agricultural supplies to the Western Sub-Regional Office of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, including melon seeds, watering cans, spray cans, garden spades, and fertilizer.

Raynick Jack, ADRA emergency support officer, said the initiative was designed to strengthen local food production and disaster preparedness.

“The produce can generate income for your institution and provide food security during times of disaster when access to food may be limited,” he said. “Having vegetables available will help support both staff and students during such times.”

Kukudu Adventist College agriculture teacher, John Apisio, welcomed the support.

“These items will greatly assist our school farm, especially as we have faced challenges with limited equipment such as wheelbarrows, garden spades, and nursery nets for our gardens,” he said.

“We will take good care of these items provided and use them to improve vegetable production on our school farm. This livelihood initiative will support our department and help generate income for the school.”

The assistance was provided through ADRA’s Disaster Ready Church project, funded by the South Pacific Division, Trans Pacific Union Mission, and Solomon Islands Mission.

As part of the initiative, ADRA also organized a one-day training program for staff from Kukudu Adventist College and the Western Sub-Regional Office. Representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, together with a local melon farmer, provided practical instruction in cultivating vegetables and melons.
