Action held in Chapadão do Céu, Goiás, provides free food to the population.

Despite a substantial agricultural sector and a high standard of living, poverty and food insecurity still dogs the poor in the city of Chapadão do Céu, in the central Brazilian state of Goiás. Recently, Seventh-day Adventists in the community took steps to help, setting up a “food exchange” stand.

The stall was displayed in front of the home of a resident of the Jardim Terra Nova neighborhood. With a sign reading, "Take if you need it and leave if you can," the project captures the attention of passersby.

Vannyele Mesquita, initiative organizer, serves interested parties throughout the day. According to her, it all began with the collection of food.

“People ask if they can get more items and when I see what they really need, I prepare a basic basket to donate. Many support the project and bring their food,” Vannyele explained.

She says she plans to rotate the tent and take it to other parts of the city. “We need resources to collect more food and help other people in the surrounding community,” she added.

Solidarity

Nívia Nascimento helped decorate the tent. She says she has an ability to write and draw, and was honored to serve others.

“In this project we have the opportunity to help our fellow man in several areas: with food, prayer, and spiritual comfort, especially now,” Nivia emphasized.

According to Olgles Silva, these are critical times, but she believes that actions such as this make a difference in the lives of the people who need it most.

“We cannot stand by seeing families in need. As a Church, we need to act despite this new coronavirus pandemic. And, all of our work is carried out with the necessary hygiene measures,” Olgles said.
