Victims of Heavy Rains in São Paulo, Brazil, Receive Help from Adventist Agency

Due to the rains that have affected several regions of the State of São Paulo since January 28, the disturbances caused by the floods have left around 5,548 families homeless or displaced so far.

Among the victims are eight children. In addition, there are 14 injured, three missing, and many families homeless. According to the Civil Defense, 39 municipalities in the state register cases of flooding, falling trees and walls, and landslides due to the rains.

In order to respond to another emergency, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is working in the Franco da Rocha region, in the area affected by the landslide last weekend, after heavy rains that hit the city in the Metropolitan region of Sao Paulo. The team visited the affected area and assessed the immediate needs to offer adequate help and register the beneficiary families.

In partnership with regional authorities and the Adventist Solidarity Action (ASA), ADRA is working directly with families affected by the natural disaster.

Those registered receive ready meals and “home kits,” which contain items such as blankets, sheets, face and bath towels, clothespins, a clothesline, aluminum cups and plates, cutlery, frying pans, and food storage pots.

In addition, the task force will guarantee three months of assistance to registered families through the donation of basic food baskets. In the coming days, more measures should be announced in order to collaborate with those affected.
