A new space designed to enhance the quality of care for dementia patients was opened at the Sydney Adventist Hospital in New South Wales, Australia. This represents a milestone in the hospital’s commitment to improving the care and experience of dementia patients.

The initiative, supported by generous donors and the San Foundation, aims to create a calming and supportive environment that caters to the unique needs of patients living with dementia.

“We know that coming into an acute hospital setting can escalate the impacts of a cognitive impairment on patients, their families and their care team. So it’s important we try to where we can work with families and patients to reduce the impact that that stress causes,” said Brett Goods, Adventist HealthCare CEO.

”The Rosella Activity Room has been thoughtfully designed to provide a welcoming and therapeutic atmosphere,” said Judy Tanna, managing director of the San Foundation. “It is equipped with engaging activities that promote cognitive stimulation, social interaction, and emotional well-being.”

The room features soft lighting, comfortable furnishings, and sensory tools that help reduce anxiety and agitation. ”These features play a crucial role in enhancing the patients’ sense of safety and belonging while also promoting independence,” said Tanna.

The activity room’s name, Rosella, is a nod to the local Australian bird species known for its vibrant colors, reflecting the positive and uplifting environment the space creates for patients.

”The dedicated space allows patients to engage in activities that cater to their cognitive and emotional needs, helping to maintain their mental acuity and provide them with a sense of purpose and joy,” said Tanna. ”By offering a place where patients can interact with peers and participate in structured activities, we aim to reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness, which are common challenges for those living with dementia. The benefits extend beyond the patients to their families and caregivers, providing peace of mind and reassurance that their loved ones are in a nurturing and compassionate environment.”

Dr. Ketan Bhatt, a leading figure in our dementia care program, expressed his optimism about the positive impact of the Rosella Activity Room.

“The opening of the Rosella Activity Room is a significant advancement in our care approach for dementia patients,” said Dr Bhatt. “This space is not just about providing activities; it’s about creating an environment where patients can feel secure, valued, and engaged.

The room was dedicated to a special service joined by the hospital admin, unit staff, and the chaplaincy team. As part of the blessing of the activity room, Steve Stephenson, director of Mission Integration reflected on the comprehensive approach that is being taken to support patients with cognitive impairment and their loved ones.

Chaplain Lucy Choong then delivered a short blessing.

“We thank you for the provision of this specialty ward and the staff here in the Rosella Activity Room, we ask for the love and compassion of our Lord Jesus to permeate this place and for the comfort, wisdom and counsel of the Holy Spirit to be felt here continually,” she prayed.

”The creation of the Rosella Activity Room would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our community,” said Tanna. ”The San Foundation played a pivotal role in rallying donors and resources to bring this project to fruition. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed to making this space a reality.

”Your generosity has a direct impact on the lives of our patients, allowing us to offer a higher standard of care and a more compassionate approach to dementia treatment. The Rosella Activity Room is a testament to what we can achieve together when we unite for a common cause."
