Day two of the Southern Africa–Indian Ocean Division (SID) Leadership Summit shifted the focus from identity to foundation, asking what sustains leaders in their calling as Christ’s ambassadors.

In a morning devotion titled “Grounded in the Bible: Focused on Mission,” Alyssa Truman, communication director for the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, told delegates that mission cannot be sustained by strategy alone, but by leaders whose lives are rooted in Scripture. Referring to the summit theme, “Ambassadors of Christ: Integrated for Mission,” she said faithful leadership begins with being “grounded deeply and continually in the Word of God.”

Truman pointed to Paul’s relationship with Timothy as an example of spiritual formation and resilience. In 2 Timothy 1:5, she noted Paul’s reference to the faith passed down through Timothy’s grandmother Lois and mother Eunice, and established in Timothy himself. She added that Paul’s counsel in 2 Timothy 3:14–17 called Timothy to remain anchored in the sacred writings he had known since childhood—guidance that remains relevant for leaders navigating complex ministry realities today.

Truman also emphasized that grounding in Scripture is inseparable from prayer. “Prayer is not preparation for leadership,” she said. “Prayer is leadership.”

Building on that foundation, she outlined characteristics of biblically grounded leadership, including submitting to Scripture as final authority, remembering calling before position, depending on God rather than self, choosing servanthood over status, and prioritizing character over competence. Citing Galatians 6:9, she said faithfulness matters more than visible results, adding, “We are not owners of the mission, but stewards.”

Truman further referenced Nehemiah’s response to Jerusalem’s broken walls, noting that before rebuilding came grief and prayer. Quoting Nehemiah 1:4, she highlighted the burden Nehemiah carried for his people as a model of compassionate leadership. She invited delegates to consider how Scripture keeps leaders from becoming numb to the needs within their territories and instead cultivates empathy and action.

Delegates said the message reinforced the spiritual starting point of leadership. Tony Neerings, chief financial officer of the Southern Africa Union Conference, said the devotion reaffirmed that the church stands not on achievement or qualifications, but on dependence on God and faithfulness to His Word.

Mpho Rantsoabe, executive secretary of the KwaZulu-Natal Free State Conference, reflected that leadership can appear strong outwardly while lacking spiritual depth, adding that God looks beyond presentation to the condition of the heart.

Jessie Mukobela-Moyo, chief financial officer of the Namibia North Conference, also referenced Nehemiah’s burden for Jerusalem, saying true leadership begins with a heart moved by God’s work—one that mourns what is broken and serves with compassion.

Truman closed with an appeal for leaders to return to the Bible not as an occasional reference point, but as the foundation of their ministry. She prayed that, in hindsight, they would recognize they remained standing not through personal strength, but because they were grounded.
