A new episode of the Seeking Understanding series will be released in time for Creation Sabbath, which takes place on October 26, 2024. Creation Sabbath is an annual global event observed by Seventh-day Adventists to emphasize the doctrine of creation, central to the Everlasting Gospel as described in Revelation 14:6-7. The day offers churches an opportunity to engage with their communities, highlighting the biblical message that all people are created by God and that salvation is available to everyone.

Focus on Science and Faith

The latest episode of Seeking Understanding focuses on Dr. Mart de Groot, an astronomer whose career reflects both scientific achievement and a commitment to biblical principles. The series, known for examining the lives of scientists who are dedicated to both their research and faith, uses Dr. de Groot’s story to explore the relationship between science and Scripture.

Filmed at the historic Armagh Observatory in Northern Ireland, the episode provides a backdrop that complements the episode’s themes. While the visual setting adds interest, the series' focus remains on the insights shared by the featured scientists. Timothy Standish, the episode’s producer, emphasized the value of these contributions. “Each time I work on one of these films, I’m struck by the depth of thought the participants share. Dr. de Groot’s perspectives are no exception.”

The Journey of Dr. Mart de Groot

The episode highlights Dr. de Groot's journey in astronomy, beginning with the discovery of the star P-Cygni on August 18, 1600. This discovery, observed in the Cygnus constellation, became foundational in the field of stellar research and ultimately played a role in Dr. de Groot earning his PhD in astronomy nearly four centuries later. The episode explores how Dr. de Groot integrates his scientific work with his belief in the Bible.

Scheduled for release in conjunction with Creation Sabbath, this episode encourages viewers to consider the harmony between scientific exploration and the biblical account of creation. Churches observing Creation Sabbath are invited to use the event as a means of sharing the message of God's creative power and care for humanity. This aligns with the core message of the series, which underscores the relevance of faith in modern scientific inquiry.

As the world faces challenges from natural disasters, wars, and other crises, the themes of Creation Sabbath point to a message of hope and reassurance. In John 16:33 (NKJV), Christ states, "In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." This episode of "Seeking Understanding" aims to reinforce this message by showing the connection between creation, faith, and scientific discovery.

About Seeking Understanding

The Seeking Understanding series highlights the personal journeys of scientists who have faced challenges to their faith and explores the evidence they have discovered that aligns nature with a biblical worldview. Each episode offers a unique blend of engaging stories and compelling scientific insights. The series is produced by the Geoscience Research Institute (GRI).

About the Geoscience Research Institute

GRI was founded in 1958 to examine questions of origins using both scientific evidence and biblical revelation. The Institute believes that an exclusive reliance on science alone is too limited in scope, and instead promotes an integrated approach to understanding origins. Through research and communication, the GRI serves the Seventh-day Adventist Church in advancing knowledge and fostering dialogue on the relationship between faith and science.
