Fifty-one people were baptized in Kiru Village in Papua New Guinea’s Central Province, following a week-long district camp meeting run from August 15–22 by Pastor Wally Kapi, Central Papua Conference’s (CPC) stewardship director.
Pastor Kapi delivered messages based on the week’s theme, “God’s Final Call—I Will Go”. More than 500 church members from Maria District attended the meeting, some of which were a few United Church members and Bahai followers.
Among the 51 people that were baptized on Sabbath, August 21, were a United Church deacon, a Bahai follower, and a murderer. It was the highest number of people baptized in the history of Maria District.
Pastor Kapi preached about stewardship and encouraged the audience to bring back one-tenth of all their produce to God’s “storehouse”. He said many times we have robbed God through our actions, such as failing to return tithes and offerings, misusing our resources, mismanagement of our time, and many more acts of negligence and ignorance of God’s instructions. He continued by saying, “Test and see that the Lord is good”.
Many people who attended the camp meeting came from villages far deep in the jungles of Central Province that are only accessible by bush tracks, some of which require days to travel. The local people appreciated the messages and made up their minds to follow what God has instructed them to do in the Bible.
Following the baptism, more than 50 additional people took their stand to follow Christ when an appeal was made by Pastor Kapi.
In closing, Pastor Kapi thanked the faithful missionaries in the area who had left the comfort of their homes to minister to the people in this remote part of the country.
