Pastor Dr. Ernest Khonje, a senior Seventh-day Adventist pastor and theological educator whose 40 years of ministry have shaped generations of Adventist leaders in Malawi, has been publicly honoured for his lifetime of service.

The ceremony took place at Kawale Seventh-day Adventist Church on Sunday, 14 June 2026, and drew church leaders, family members, former students, and well-wishers. Musical tributes were led by Morning Star.

Dr. Khonje's mentorship has extended into the highest offices of the Adventist Church in Malawi. Both the current Malawi Union Conference President and the Central Malawi Conference President are among his former students, a marker of the reach of his teaching and pastoral guidance over four decades.

The event was organised by Building A Culture Of Motivation, Recognition And Support (BACOMRAS), a recognition initiative run by Pastor Medson Mazengela, Director of the Blessed Beyond Limits Initiative (BBLI). BACOMRAS was established to celebrate educators, pastors, and long-serving church workers whose contributions have often gone unmarked.

Pastor Mazengela was travelling in the United States at the time of the ceremony. His tribute was delivered on his behalf by Central Malawi Conference President Pastor John A.G. Phiri, who described Dr. Khonje as a humble servant leader.

"We gather today to honour Dr. Khonje, a man whose life has been dedicated to service, education, mentorship, and leadership," the message read. "Many church leaders, pastors, teachers, and professionals have benefited from his guidance and instruction, and his impact is clearly seen in the lives he has shaped."

The message went on to reflect on the mark of Khonje's legacy, the willingness to see former students overtake their teacher.

"Dr. Khonje has lived by the principle of investing in others," the tribute continued. "Even those he once taught have gone on to occupy influential leadership positions, yet he has always rejoiced in their success without competition or pride. His life reminds us that true leadership is measured by the lives we empower."

BACOMRAS presented Dr. Khonje with a customised trophy and a monetary award. The organisation also expressed appreciation to Shepherdess Elizabeth Khonje for her partnership throughout her husband's 40 years of ministry.

Receiving the recognition, Dr. Khonje and Shepherdess Khonje thanked BACOMRAS, church leaders, and those in attendance.

"We sincerely appreciate everyone present here today, including the Central Malawi Conference President, for this act of humility and recognition," they said. "We encourage you to continue showing the same kindness and appreciation to others."

Dr. Khonje is retiring from active ministry after 40 years of service as a pastor, lecturer, and mentor to Adventist workers across Malawi.
