Leather Craft Workshops in Siberia Combine Skill-Building With Spiritual Growth

In late April, a series of leather craft workshops were held at a Seventh-day Adventist church in Novoaltaisk, a town in Central Siberia, Russia. The initiative aimed to teach participants practical skills while engaging them in meaningful conversations about faith.

The master classes were made possible through an ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency) supported project, which provided tools and materials for up to eight participants to work simultaneously under the guidance of a mentor. Over several days, attendees learned the basics of working with genuine leather, producing handcrafted items while also exploring spiritual topics in a friendly, welcoming environment.

“People who came to the master classes worked with great interest,” said local organizers. “At the same time, the Holy Spirit was actively working in the hearts of the participants.”

The church community played a key role in supporting the initiative. Members provided meals, filmed video footage, and even composed poetry inspired by the events. The interactive setting allowed attendees to share personal experiences and engage in open discussions about craftsmanship, but also about life, hope, and faith.

Roman Gennadievich Ershov, the church pastor, reflected on the impact of the program:

“The idea of socialization through acquiring new skills was received with great interest by our local church members,” he said. “Andrei Vladimirovich, who mastered this craft, shared not only knowledge but also practical experience, allowing community members and guests to participate directly in the process.”

He added that the workshops revealed new ways to combine social outreach with evangelism.

“We witnessed a positive response from people connected to our church. This service has opened doors for building sincere, open relationships and sharing the Gospel, with the support of the Holy Spirit, so that others may also find faith in Jesus,” he said. “May this effort serve the noble purpose set forth in Scripture, so that we too can say from the heart: ‘For we are saved in hope.’”

In addition to equipping participants with new vocational skills, the workshops provided a foundation for deeper spiritual engagement, illustrating how practical ministries can support both personal development and mission.
