In a continent often characterized by challenges—political instability, economic hardships, and rapid cultural shifts—there’s a beacon of hope and renewal: young people of Africa united under the banner of Generation. Youth. Christ. (GYC) Africa 2025. This movement exemplifies spiritual revival and mission outreach within the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Africa. 

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, served as a pivotal hub for this year’s GYC Africa conference and missions. Babcock University hosted the event from April 17 to 21, 2025, drawing approximately 1,400 youth from across the continent.

Changed Hearts and Souls

The messages presented throughout the conference centered on prayer, faith, and service. As a result, many young people responded to altar calls, and six chose to be baptized. The presenters challenged participants to embody integrity, service, and unwavering trust in God’s promises, and many of the listeners committed to involvement in postconference missions.

Collaborative Engagement

A core aspect of this revival was the collaboration between the West-Central Africa Division (WAD) and the Public Campus Ministries (PCM). WAD’s regional influence, PCM’s experience in youth ministry and evangelism, and GYC Africa’s passion and burden for mission created a platform for spiritual awakening. This partnership exemplified the unity and cross-cultural synergy necessary for effective mission work in Africa, where diverse languages, traditions, and challenges converge.

Despite the obstacles faced by many young people—financial constraints, cultural pressures, and secular distractions—the conference’s large attendance was a testament to the power of collaborative ministry. 

Together the entities organized prayer sessions, seminars, and outreach activities that emphasized the importance of prayer and Bible study as the foundation for spiritual growth. These events also fostered active engagement, which empowered participants to translate their faith into practical service.

Outreach and Evangelism

The GYC Africa 2025’s outreach components involved attendees participating in nine community outreach activities across local markets, prisons, hospitals, and orphanages. These efforts were not just acts of charity but concrete demonstrations of faith in action. Distributing books such as Steps to Christ and The Great Controversy, sharing personal testimonies, and offering medical services created avenues for divine encounters. Many community members experienced the tangible love of Christ through these acts, leading to an interest in spiritual matters.

The mission efforts, however, did not begin at the conference. Preconference activities saw students volunteering at university campuses across West Africa—Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Ghana, and Nigeria—planting seeds of hope and truth in diverse settings. Up to 16 students who had never heard about Adventism were inspired to travel to GYC Africa 2025 to seek a deeper, more impactful relationship with Christ.

At Abia State University, a public university in Nigeria, six students gave their lives to Christ through baptism. These efforts were part of WAD Impact 2025, a larger strategic initiative aimed at revitalizing evangelism across the region.

Postconference Missions

Following the GYC Africa 2025 conference, the mission focus shifted to northern Nigeria, a region characterized by a predominantly Muslim population. From April 22 to May 10, 2025, a team of young missionaries embarked on a mission trip to Jikwoyi in the Nyanya district and the University of Abuja. Their efforts—based on compassion, humility, and prayer—targeted a population often resistant to Christian outreach.

Health and Medical Missions

A standout feature of this outreach was the medical mission component. About 1,460 individuals received free health screenings, professional consultations, and medications. The medical team performed 23 surgeries, ranging from hernia repairs to fibroid removals, bringing relief to many patients. The medical efforts built a bridge of trust, opening hearts to receiving spiritual messages. For many, medical care was the first encounter they’d had with Adventist values of compassion and service, and it created opportunities for Bible studies and spiritual conversations.

Bible Studies and Evangelism

Door-to-door Bible studies became a vital part of this mission. Missionaries met individuals and families at their homes, in shops, and in community centers to offer spiritual encouragement and prayer. One man who was battling depression found renewed hope and accepted additional spiritual counseling after listening to Bible studies and singing hymns.

Nightly evangelistic meetings drew increasing crowds, many of whom expressed a desire to learn more about the Sabbath, the Second Coming, and the state of the dead.

Long-term Impact and Sustainability

The mission’s impact extended beyond the immediate outreach. Several Bible workers and local church members stayed behind in the region, continuing the follow-up with new contacts. The community’s response has been very positive; local residents are increasingly engaged with the church, and many have expressed a desire to learn more.

Outcomes and Future Expectations

The results of these combined efforts were 14 individuals who committed to baptism and many more who have shown interest in ongoing studies; and numerous books and other religious literature being distributed, including 1,723 copies of The Great Controversy, 764 copies of Steps to Christ, 1,223 copies of Mysterious Answers to Prayer, 1,159 copies of A Trip Into the Supernatural, and many Signs of the Times magazines. The medical and evangelistic initiatives have been building trust, planting spiritual seeds, and opening pathways for ongoing evangelism.
