Betikama Adventist College students are enjoying fresh cabbages and other vegetables from their school farm, thanks to a sustainable agricultural project initiated by the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) in the Solomon Islands.
The farm not only supplies nutritious food for the dining hall and provides hands-on training in agriculture, it also generates income by selling produce. The initiative is part of ADRA’s Wellbeing and Sustainable Economic Agricultural Solutions project and is supported by ADRA Australia.
With the income from the farm, the school has been able to purchase a new two-tonne truck, which will help to boost farm operations.
A Broader Vision for the South Pacific
The project reflects the South Pacific Division’s (SPD) focus on empowering Adventist schools to impact both students and their communities. SPD oversees more than 500 Adventist schools across 17 countries and territories, where access to fresh and affordable food is often a challenge. By supporting sustainable agriculture, the Church is helping schools like Betikama provide healthier meals while teaching practical skills students can apply in their daily lives.
ADRA’s Ongoing Commitment
ADRA Solomon Islands, in partnership with ADRA Australia, continues to strengthen food security, health, and economic resilience across the region. Through agricultural initiatives, families and schools gain access to sustainable food sources while also creating small-scale business opportunities.
School-based agricultural projects like Betikama’s not only supply nutritious food but also generate income and serve as training grounds where students learn to plant, harvest, and manage crops.
