Sudan—The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) recently completed the Water Access Capacity Building project, which will improves hygiene practices and access to clean water for thousands of Sudanese in West Darfur, benefiting nearly 57,000 people.
United States—Adventist Risk Management reports that 120 of its covered locations may have suffered damage from hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Estimated costs of damages will not be known for several weeks. During the 2004 hurricane season the insurance company paid U.S. $13.5 million to 400 locations to assist in storm recovery.
United States—Dr. Benjamin Carson, director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and a member of the Spencerville Seventh-day Adventist Church in Maryland, was featured on National Public Radio’s “This I Believe” segment during the “Morning Edition” newsmagazine of Oct. 10, 2005. The program, which has more than 13 million listeners in the United States, draws what NPR calls its largest audience. Carson paid tribute to his mother’s faith, concluding: “There is no job more important than parenting. This I believe.”
United States—Seventh-day Adventist statesman Bert Beach’s “good conduct code” for missionaries abroad—aimed at helping missionaries better integrate into host cultures—was referenced favorably in an article by Russia missions expert Lawrence A. Uzzell. The article was published in the Fall 2005 issue of “The Review of Faith & International Affairs.”
Belgium—Roger Lenoir, 83, Life and Health ministries director for the Adventist Church in Belgium, received a “Medal of Distinction” from the world church’s Health Ministries department during the Oct. 9 Annual Council meeting of the church’s executive leaders in Silver Spring, Maryland. Lenoir, retired for 18 years, has conducted 370 stop smoking clinics since retirement, on top of 300 given during his active service. Dr. Allan Handysides, director of health ministries for the world church, said Lenoir was honored “because there are 50,000 people in Belgium who are no longer smoking.”
Australia - The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Australia is advertising the benefits of a healthy lifestyle on the popular 106.5 FM radio station October. The ad encourages people to connect with the Adventist health message by visiting the church’s Web site, enrolling in the health correspondence course, and buying the Taking Charge of Your Health DVD series. The ad will move to two other radio stations in December 2005 and February 2006.
Canada—Dr. Andrea Luxton, associate director of the Education Department at the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s world headquarters, has been elected president of Canadian University College.
