The Adventist Development and Relief Agency in Australia will donate A$500,000 over the next 10 years to train Seventh-day Adventist teachers in the Pacific islands.
“ADRA is interested in training teachers because education is the fundamental building block for human empowerment,” says executive director David Syme. “It is vital to have competent teachers for education to be effective.”
The Adventist Church in the South Pacific is currently donating A$20,000 a year for this project, and its education department is using the donations to fund short-term professional development seminars for teachers.
Associate education director Barry Hill sees the seminars as a long-term strategy for improving the standard of Adventist education in the Pacific. “Education is a critical part of helping yourself,” he says. “It promotes self-sufficiency.”
There are more than 6,000 Adventist schools around the world—some 100 of these are located in Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific region.
