Seventh-day Adventist students across North America have raised nearly $25,000 to help feed children in Afghanistan and establish children's programs in New York City.

Seventh-day Adventist students across North America have raised nearly US$25,000 to help feed children in Afghanistan and establish children’s programs in New York City. The initiative, called “Project 1+1 For the Children,” was sponsored by the education department of the church in North America.

“We wanted to give our students the opportunity to respond to the needs of their fellow human beings and experience the joy that comes from sharing with neighbors who they have never seen or met,” said Don Hevener, education department director and a vice president of the church in North America.

The project petitioned every Adventist student to donate two dollars; one for the Afghan children and one for the children in New York City. The idea stemmed from United States President George Bush’s request for every school-age child in America to share one dollar to assist hungry Afghan children.

Hevener will present the donated funds to Pastor Don Schneider, president of the Adventist Church in North America, in a special ceremony April 12. The money will be shared equally between the Adventist-run New York ministry and the Bush initiative.
