Specialists from the Ana Stahl Adventist Clinic in Peru and AdventHealth Castle Rock in the United States participated in the first free neurosurgery campaign held in the city of Iquitos, Loreto region, Peru. The initiative enabled eight cervical and lumbar spine surgeries to be performed on patients requiring highly complex procedures.
The surgeries were performed using a high-end neurosurgical microscope, the only one of its kind in Iquitos. Specialists used this equipment during the procedures to work with greater precision.
Iquitos is located in the Peruvian Amazon and is primarily accessible by air and river transport. The health campaign brought complex care closer to patients in the region who required these procedures.
The work also reached communities located along the Nanay River, a tributary of the Amazon River, in the province of Maynas, Loreto region. More than 600 people from five communities received free care in general medicine, ophthalmology, dentistry, and pharmacy. Medication was also distributed to treated patients.
As part of prevention efforts, the team visited nine communities and distributed 366 buckets for water storage and 183 drinking water filters. The distribution was accompanied by workshops on disease prevention and hygiene, with the aim of improving access to water and the health of families.
The Adventist campaign combined neurosurgical procedures, medical consultations, and preventative measures in various locations in Iquitos and its surrounding communities. The initiative expanded healthcare access beyond the hospital setting, bringing different health services closer to the population.
