In October 2024, the Seventh-day Adventist Church in southern Ecuador held a sporting event to support women's health in their fight against this disease. A 3k race that brought together more than 400 participants aimed to raise awareness of the importance of prevention and early detection of cancer.
The winners received a commemorative medal, a special kit, and a Bible as part of this Pink October month. Since 60% of the competitors were non-Adventists, their participation also opened the opportunity for the Church to preach to them and involve them in community service.
“We are happy to be able to join in raising awareness and preventing breast cancer. We have promoted, together with public entities, this action to reach more people. Through the 3k race, we were able to attract interested people by leaving the message found in the scriptures about taking care of our body, which is the temple of the Holy Spirit,” said Celia Olivo, director of the Women’s Ministry at the Adventist headquarters for the south of the country and organizer of the event. “We thank all those who were able to make this event possible, and especially God, because He was supporting every part of this activity.”
The event also included a health open house, with doctors specialising in these areas and information tents on prevention and early detection.
In Ecuador, 4 million people were diagnosed with breast cancer until 2020. The Adventist Church is involved in this health problem with the message of prevention and care, in addition to hope and salvation in Christ Jesus.
