Oregon Group Sponsors Anti-Catholic Billboard

Oregon Group Sponsors Anti-Catholic Billboard

A religious group in Oregon, United States, that has financed an anti-Roman Catholic billboard is not affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church, says a spokesperson for the Adventist Church.

A religious group in Oregon, United States, that has financed an anti-Roman Catholic billboard is not affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church, says a spokesperson for the Adventist Church.

“There has been confusion in the media regarding the identity of the group that is behind the billboard,” says Kermit Netteburg, assistant to the president of the Adventist Church in North America. The group, which calls itself the Rogue Valley Historical Seventh-day Adventist Church, is not associated with the 12 million-member Seventh-day Adventist Church, which has its headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, United States, explains Netteburg.

The billboard, erected in May near the town of Medford, Oregon, reads “The Pope is the Antichrist, Free Proof.”  According to media reports, Larry Weathers of the Rogue Valley church says the group plans to keep the sign in place until May 2002, when the current contract with the billboard space provider expires.

The billboard has gained national media attention, with some branding it “unduly offensive” and “hurtful” and calling for its removal. The American Civil Liberties Union has defended the right of the Rouge Valley organization to erect the sign.
