Superheroes, princesses, and colorful shapes of every kind filled the sky during the first Adventist Education Kite Festival in Belo Horizonte. The event, held at the city’s Ecological Park, brought families together for a day of leisure, creativity, and fun.

For a month, parents were challenged to make kites with their children in a project that aimed to go beyond entertainment and create lasting family memories. The results exceeded expectations, with more than 200 participants joining the competition, which awarded prizes in three categories.

The contest evaluated the largest kite, the longest tail, and the most creative kite. Only parents who involved their children in the kite-making process were eligible.

“We want parents to relive childhood memories and teach their children about special moments they once experienced. Strengthening families is the festival’s main goal,” said Joelton Oliveira, principal of the Pampulha Adventist School and event organizer.

Among the excited families was that of 9-year-old Alice Martins, a fourth-grade student. With help from her mother, Alice chose a lilac star model.

“I chose the lilac star because I like stars and that color. Dad watched several videos to make it look like the picture,” she said.

Her father, Washington Martins, emphasized the importance of the experience.

“It was a unique moment for us, because it involved the family from the production to the kite flying. It will certainly be etched in my daughter’s memory, even more so now, after winning the ‘Most Creative Kite’ category, showing the fruits of our family work,” he said.

For Miriam Freitas and her family, the festival was a highlight of togetherness.

“Every detail we thought of together will be kept as a special memory. Our days are increasingly packed with work and little time for family activities. Having moments like these, together with my children and husband, undoubtedly strengthens our family,” she said.

The festival was part of Father’s Month celebrations, which also included a week of “beard therapy,” where fathers could groom their beards, receive massages at school, enter raffles, and win special gifts.

More than just fun, the challenge provided an opportunity to strengthen family bonds and create memories. The Adventist Education Kite Festival ended with applause and many smiles, leaving the Belo Horizonte sky more colorful and families closer together.
