The massive wildfire that broke out on January 30 in El Bolsón, Río Negro, Argentina, has left a devastating impact, destroying more than 3,800 hectares of forest and affecting at least 330 homes. Over 2,500 people were forced to evacuate as flames spread through high mountain areas. While the emergency in urban areas is now under control, active fire outbreaks persist in the mountains.

ADRA Argentina Mobilizes Emergency Relief

In response to the crisis, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Argentina swiftly conducted a damage assessment in the hardest-hit communities, including Costa Azul, Mallín del Medio, and Saturnino. Based on the findings, ADRA activated its National Emergency Response Plan, offering financial aid and essential supplies to displaced families.

With the support of ADRA International and ADRA South America, ADRA Argentina is providing direct financial assistance to those who lost their homes entirely. This support allows affected families to purchase food, cleaning supplies, and materials to restore damaged infrastructure, including essential water networks.

ADRA Argentina continues working in the affected area.

“This aid allows families to cover basic needs, purchase cleaning products, and acquire materials to restore the water network,” explained María José Amigo, Program Director of ADRA Argentina.

The Road to Recovery: Rebuilding Lives

As the immediate emergency subsides, the focus shifts to rebuilding homes and replacing essential belongings. According to an ADRA report, many families have chosen to camp on their land to protect what little remains, while others are staying with relatives, in temporary shelters, or receiving community assistance.

The challenge now is helping these families regain stability and rebuild their lives. ADRA is working closely with local authorities, including the Emergency Committee (COEM) and volunteers, to coordinate relief efforts and provide long-term support.

“The support of humanitarian organizations and the community will be essential in helping families recover,” said ADRA Argentina representatives.
