Montemorelos University’s Board of Governors, led by Elie Henry, president of the Inter-American Division (IAD), gathered on Nov. 11, 2024, to review the university’s progress and set future goals. Under the theme “Summing Up for a New World…On a Path of Challenges,” Dr. Ismael Castillo, president of the university, presented a report that highlighted both the institution’s growth and the ongoing challenges it faces.
Driven by Faith
Dr. Castillo emphasized the university’s mission, which is rooted in faith and trust that God will provide. “Our journey has been guided by divine wisdom and knowledge,” he stated, reflecting on the many milestones the institution has achieved. Castillo pointed out the university’s significant growth over the past 30 years, including expanding its academic programs, such as the introduction of Dentistry and Montemorelos Virtual University, and increasing its global presence with campuses in Cuba, Venezuela, and Angola.
“Thirty years have gone by quickly, but we’ve seen God’s hand in every step,” Castillo remarked, highlighting the role faith has played in their accomplishments.
New Initiatives and Projects
The Board also heard updates from faculty deans on ongoing projects and areas of development. These updates included initiatives to strengthen Adventist education in Mexico, build partnerships for real-world internships, and continue the university’s impact both locally and globally.
Castillo acknowledged that while the university has made significant strides, there are still areas that require further attention and resources.
The Board approved the president’s report as Pastor Henry expressed confidence that, with God’s guidance, the institution will continue to grow and thrive.
Leadership Changes
In addition to the strategic updates, the Board appointed new leaders within the university. Melquiades Sosa was named coordinator of the Industrial and Systems Engineering program, and Filiberto Grajeda was appointed to lead the Graduate School in the School of Engineering and Technology.
The Board also awarded the Israel Leito Medal of Merit to José A. Maldonado, public accountant, in recognition of his significant contributions to the development of human resources within Adventist institutions. The prestigious award is named in honor of Israel Leito, who served as the president of the Inter-America for 24 years.
Joel Sebastian, vice president of Financial Affairs, presented a summary of the year’s financial status, including student retention, liquidity, and fundraising efforts. The Board reviewed projections for 2025, which were previously approved by the university’s financial committees, and commended the university’s commitment to financial transparency and efficient resource management.
Ivelisse Herrera, treasurer of the IAD, praised the university’s financial management, saying, “Behind these numbers, I see the great effort to keep this institution running smoothly. We thank God for the way this university continues to serve its mission.”
A New Frontier in Education
A key highlight of the meeting was the inauguration of a section of the Multidisciplinary Research and Innovation Learning Center. The learning center, a cutting-edge facility designed to support clinical simulation and multidisciplinary education, will be completed in 2026. Once fully operational, it will be one of the university’s flagship buildings, university officials said.
The Board of Governors meets twice a year to review the university’s strategic direction, oversee financial planning, and appoint senior leadership. The Board is chaired by Pastor Henry, with union presidents from Mexico and the division executive secretary serving as vice presidents. The university president acts as the Board’s secretary.
