The I Will Go strategic plan that the Seventh-day Adventist Church will follow for 2025–2030 offers more than structure; it offers spiritual direction. Centered on four pillars, Communion with God, Identity in Christ, Unity in the Spirit, and Mission for All, it calls members not only to act, but to become.

The first two pillars, explored in previous articles, reminded delegates that mission begins not with motion but with connection: with personal and abiding communion with God. Then, through testimony and theology, we discovered that identity is not something we construct but something we receive.

Now comes the third pillar: Unity in the Spirit, a call that is both timeless and urgent.

Not Uniformity, But Diversity in Oneness

In his keynote presentation, Elias Brasil de Souza, director of the Biblical Research Institute, addressed the biblical foundation for unity. “Unity,” he said, “is not utopia. It’s not a dream. It is a gift of the Spirit of God to the church.” 

This gift doesn’t require sameness. “A pile of bricks is not unity,” he explained. “But when those bricks are joined to build a house, each with its role, we see true unity.” The Spirit does not erase our differences. It infuses them with divine purpose.

De Souza illustrated this through three biblical portraits:

• Psalm 133: Unity is like sacred oil flowing from Aaron’s head and like the dew of Hermon watering Zion, symbols of divine blessing and interdependence

• John 17: In His final prayer, Christ pleaded that His followers “may be one” as He is one with the Father.

• Ephesians 4: Paul’s exhortation to preserve “the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” is grounded in a sevenfold oneness: one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of all.

Unity Is a Witness

“Jesus prayed for our unity,” de Souza emphasized, “so that the world would believe the Father sent Him.” In other words, he said, unity is not just an internal value, it is a public witness. When we live in love across cultures, generations, and perspectives, we reflect the image of the invisible God. Unity means love — love that asks nothing in return. Ellen White, quoted in the presentation, wrote: “The secret of unity is found in the equality of believers in Christ. The reason for all divisions, discord, and difference is found in separation from Christ”
(Selected Messages, 1:259).

Healing across Romania: Unity in Action

An inspiring testimony of Spirit-empowered unity came from Romania, where the Adventist Church launched a nationwide medical outreach initiative. In rural areas where health-care access remains limited, mobile clinics and caravans brought free medical care to more than 100 villages and 30 cities. The effort mobilized more than 800 doctors, 2,000 health-care professionals, and hundreds of students, pastors, and volunteers serving together as one body.

Together, they provided more than €3.5 million (more than US$4 million) worth of care, completely free of charge. Each mobile clinic also included pastors who prayed, shared literature, and offered Christ-centered support. More than 500 women discovered life-threatening conditions and were referred for urgent treatment.

The Healing Work of the Holy Spirit

Maria, a literature evangelist from the United States, shared a quiet but powerful story.

“I met a veteran in Montana who had loud music blasting when I knocked on his door,” she recalled. “At first, he seemed disinterested. But I kept praying.”

Eventually, the man revealed he was using the music to drown out trauma from war. 

“Suddenly it made sense,” Maria said. “He didn’t want to remember that time.” She gave him a copy of Steps to Christ. 

“He didn’t want any other book,” she said with a smile. “But he took that one. And that felt like a holy moment.”

Her story echoes Romans 8:16: “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”

Pray Even When the Answer Is Delayed

Denise, a delegate from Brazil, shared a quiet encouragement during a prayer session: “Pray every day, even when Jesus seems to delay the answer. That delay is for your very best.”

Sometimes unity isn’t seen in global campaigns, it’s felt in daily devotion, silent trust while praying for others too.

One Body, One Spirit, One Mission

Unity is not optional; it is the condition for revival and for mission, as Mark Finley noted during the opening. 

“Unity is only mentioned twice by name in the New Testament, but the concept of oneness appears more than 300 times. The body of Christ is to be one,” Finley said. This oneness includes shared faith, shared organization, and shared direction, and it flows most powerfully from shared love, from Christ Himself.
