The latest film in the Seeking Understanding series has been released in the lead-up to Creation Sabbath 2021. This documentary revolves around Dr. Arthur Chadwick and a remote corner of Wyoming where, just under a cattle ranch’s dust and grass, an amazing treasure trove of dinosaur bones once lay hidden. That was before Dr. Chadwick was contacted by the ranch owner, who asked this Adventist paleontologist to bring his unique set of talents and–unusually for a paleontologist–his biblical worldview to the study of this dinosaur graveyard. With a team of other scientists from Southwestern Adventist University, along with scientists from other Adventist schools, Dr. Chadwick has been able to unravel the mystery of how all of those bones got to this isolated area in the United States.
In the film, not only is some of the fascinating science revealed, including the unique technologies used in recording the bones in the dinosaur bonebed, we also learn the remarkable story of how Dr. Chadwick, who as a young boy thought he was going to be a priest, instead was led by God to become a paleontologist, grappling with a science that is commonly seen to undermine the claims of Scripture. Why didn’t the data force him to lose his faith? What is it about the science he does that leads him to worship the Creator God of the Bible?
“Working on this film was a thrilling experience,” says Dr. Timothy Standish of the Geoscience Research Institute. “I’m a biologist, so I don’t often have the thrill of actually holding dinosaur bones, let alone doing it while their discoverer explains them to me. Let’s hope that some of that thrill is conveyed in this film.”
Seeking Understanding: Arthur Chadwick features astonishing creatures and an incredible scientist. It should be of interest to anyone who is curious about dinosaurs and how they are studied, but it is specifically being released for Creation Sabbath in the hope that viewers will be inspired to think about how the creation once was. In other words, the majestic creatures Dr. Chadwick studies, even though they are now extinct, will also prompt believers to contemplate the changes sin has brought to the creation after it came from the Creator’s hand!
Creation Sabbath falls on the fourth Sabbath of each October, so this year it will be celebrated on October 23rd. This is a specially designated Sabbath in the Adventist Church’s Calendar of Special Days. Creation Sabbath is set aside for contemplation of God’s grace in creating the world for our habitation, recognizing our responsibility to care for what God made, and seizing the opportunity to learn from His works. It is a reminder that “the Sabbath was made for man” (Mark 2:27), a liberating time to remember that our lives are given and sustained by the Creator God whose very definition is love.
