Among more than 3,000 athletes competing in the 8th edition of the Corrida do Soldado (Soldier’s Race), one pair stood out: 60-year-old Rogério Martinelli and his daughter, 21-year-old Isadora Viana Martinelli. Running together, they completed the 10 km course in 54 minutes, placing third in the female athletes with disabilities category.

Isadora was born with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC), a rare condition that affects motor development and coordination. When she was one year old, her parents were advised by doctors to “give up” on her prospects. Rogério refused to accept that judgment, and today father and daughter are known on the local running circuit for their determination and teamwork.

Since 2023, the Martinellis have competed in 14 races, placing first six times, second four times, and third four times.

At each race they also highlight another shared commitment: both wear the uniform of the Pathfinder Club, a global program of the Seventh-day Adventist Church that promotes physical, social, and spiritual activities for young people.

"Every achievement is a victory," Rogério says. "Her joy on the podium makes any effort worthwhile. Many parents give up on their children at the first sign of difficulty. Sometimes we need to push our children to victory, whether against addictions or against bad habits."

The Martinellis’ youngest daughter, Lavínia, is already preparing to join them in future races, making running a full family activity.

Their participation reflects a broader national trend: according to the Brazilian Association of Road Race and Outdoor Sports Organizers (ABRACEO), street races in Brazil grew 29 percent in 2024 compared to the previous year, expanding as spaces for both inclusion and personal growth.
