A group of young Adventists in Maniçoba, Bahia, gathered for the “Feet on Earth, Heart in Heaven” race, an event designed to promote health and spiritual commitment among youth in the region. The initiative, which marked the start of the local Youth Ministries calendar, was organized to encourage participants to engage in physical activity while reinforcing the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s message of holistic well-being and discipleship.

A Race with a Purpose

The event, open to the public, was structured not only as a physical competition but also as an opportunity to foster community engagement and spiritual reflection. Organizers emphasized the race’s role in encouraging young people to prioritize their physical health while strengthening their faith.

“Many young people are just beginning to incorporate exercise into their routine,” said Diocina Alves, a participant. “Throughout the race, there was a strong sense of encouragement and teamwork, with friends helping one another stay motivated.”

Holistic Health and Faith-Based Living

Participants highlighted the event’s connection to the Adventist Church’s long-standing emphasis on health and well-being.

“The church promotes a message of balanced living, and events like this align with that mission,” said Hartclecio Nunes, another runner. “Beyond exercise, it’s also an opportunity for others to learn about the principles we uphold, which focus on physical, mental, social, and spiritual well-being.”

Event organizer Janaina Santos explained that the initiative aimed to help young people embrace a healthier lifestyle.

“Physical exercise is one of the natural remedies the church teaches, and it plays an important role in overall well-being,” she said. “We want to encourage participants to take better care of themselves, which in turn helps them lead more balanced lives.”

Emotional and Spiritual Resilience

For some participants, the race carried deeper personal meaning. Alexsandro Evangelista, who lost his niece just days before the event, initially planned to withdraw but ultimately decided to take part after receiving encouragement from friends.

“I wasn’t going to participate, but I accepted the support and went,” he said. “It turned out to be the best decision I could have made. It helped me mentally and spiritually, allowing me to process my grief in a healthier way.”

He added that the experience reinforced the event’s theme. “It reminded me that while we live on Earth, our focus should remain on heaven.”

A Faith-Driven Alternative to Carnival

For the Adventist youth in Juazeiro, the race also served as an alternative to Carnival celebrations, reflecting their commitment to a faith-based lifestyle.

“The event was a powerful reminder that our values and beliefs shape the way we spend our time,” said one participant. “It was about more than just running—it was about staying grounded in faith while striving for a greater purpose.”

With a strong turnout and enthusiastic participation, organizers view the “Feet on Earth, Heart in Heaven” race as a model for future faith-based initiatives that combine physical activity, community engagement, and spiritual growth.
