Redesigned campus space gives the long-standing theology program a dedicated home for teaching, community, and mission.

Since 1949, Bogenhofen Seminary has been a center for theological education, shaping generations of students, staff, and pastors. For many years, however, the theology department lacked a dedicated space: classes met in a side room of the parish hall and later, for decades, in the basement of the boys’ dormitory. A purpose-built seminary facility seemed out of reach.

From Basement to Breakthrough

The turning point came from an unexpected suggestion by operations technician Lorant Soós: “Why not move the administration offices and set up the theology classrooms in their place?” The proposal shifted thinking away from new construction toward creatively redesigning existing space in the cafeteria and administration building.

The idea quickly gained support. Architects, the school board, and the Ferdinand Pieringer Association all approved the plan.

School principal René Gehring remarked, “I have never seen a project go through all the committees so quickly and be received so positively.” The long-discussed vision of a proper seminary space became a concrete renovation project.

Passion behind the renovation

Construction began in April 2025. While the project focused on internal remodeling, it proved technically demanding. Installing a new ceiling in the foyer revealed structural challenges, the Adventist Book Center needed to be relocated, and overtime hours increased as deadlines approached.

Staff and workers responded with strong commitment. Many employees assisted outside regular working hours, during vacations, or beyond their usual responsibilities. The operations team carried much of the load during the most intense phase.

Managing director Max Wieser recalled, “Once, Lori [Soós] started at 3:30 a.m. and didn’t finish until 10:30 p.m.” Their dedication was key to completing the project on schedule.

New spaces, familiar mission

During the inauguration, the redesigned foyer filled with guests, friends, and supporters. For many, the opening marked the fulfilment of a long-standing hope.

“I witnessed every day of the renovation and still can’t believe that we are here today for the inauguration,” Wieser said.

Zsolt Halmi, president of the Ferdinand Pieringer Association, underlined the importance of the theology department and the shared vision made possible by many individual donors.

The new rooms are designed with both study and mission in mind, leaders say. The Martin Luther Room highlights a “return to the sources,” pointing to the Reformation, the Bible, and church history. The J. N. Andrews Room focuses on the expectation of Christ’s return, emphasizing that theology is a living mission rather than a static academic exercise.

Dean Martin Pröbstle summarized the department’s focus: “Learning leads to life. Passion for theology leads to mission.”

A new lounge now links the seminary area with the relocated administration offices, providing space for informal meetings and community life. Former classrooms have also been repurposed: the old music room now houses the Adventist Book Center, and the former computer room serves as the new secretariat.

For Bogenhofen, the upgraded facilities support the same purpose that has guided the institution for decades: preparing people who will think, serve, and live out their faith in their communities. The renewed theology space is intended to serve that mission in the years ahead.
