Lis Romero Briglia de Brito, an 8th-grade student at Guaíra Adventist School in western Paraná, was honored with two medals at the 19th Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympiad (OBMEP) during an awards ceremony held on Friday, August 1, 2025. Competing among nearly 18.5 million students nationwide, Lis received a national bronze medal and a state silver medal, becoming the only recipient from the city of Guaíra to receive national-level recognition.

The awards ceremony took place at the State University of Western Paraná (Unioeste), organized by the Toledo Regional Education Center, and recognized 66 students from schools across the region.

“The study was very important. I kept thinking about everything I went through to earn these medals,” Briglia de Brito said. “It was a lot of effort, but very rewarding. I remember the beginning of my studies, and today, being awarded is incredible.”

Her success, she says, is the result of dedicated personal effort, family encouragement, and an educational environment focused on holistic development.

Her mother, Nagila Tenório Briglia, expressed gratitude for the journey. “As a mother, I feel very happy to see my daughter following this path. I thank God first and foremost, and the school's encouragement. She’s always had a knack for math, and now she’s reaping the rewards.”

Lis’s math teacher, Maria Lussandra Domingues Louvera, also celebrated the milestone.

“Lis is a very dedicated student. From the beginning, she showed a unique strength: she solved exercises easily and quickly, and had exceptional logical reasoning,” she said. “The achievement was hers, but it's also ours.”

According to school director Eduardo Jacinto, the achievement represents the culmination of years of intentional preparation: “We dreamed of having students awarded at OBMEP. We've worked hard and encouraged them since 2021. Today, we celebrate the realization of this dream with Lis’s award.”

OBMEP is considered the largest science Olympiad in the world and is organized by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA), with support from Brazil’s Ministries of Education and Science, Technology, and Innovation. The program promotes excellence in mathematics and identifies talent across the country. During the ceremony, Fabiana Magda Garcia Papani, OBMEP's pedagogical coordinator for the western region of Paraná (PR02), emphasized the event's importance in encouraging quality education.

"It's a very important event, as families come to support us. Our focus is always on advancing education. This type of event motivates students to study and participate in the Olympiads."

Erika Sholl, OBMEP’s national coordinator of exam and awards logistics, echoed this sentiment: “Each ceremony is a pleasant surprise. The Institute recognizes its students, and that’s transformative.”

Adventist Education in Brazil extended its congratulations to Lis Romero Briglia de Brito for her outstanding achievement, expressing hope that her example will inspire other students to pursue excellence and be recognized for their dedication and academic commitment.
