A 30-year-old Adventist pastor was released after being held captive for two days by armed kidnappers near the Port-au-Prince area. The pastor, who oversees two churches, two small groups, and two schools, was abducted on September 2, 2025, while en route to deliver a financial report to his conference office.

According to the pastor, who is not being identified for safety reasons, after his car broke down, he took public transportation and then a motorcycle to reach his destination. During the motorcycle ride, he was abducted by armed men who shot the driver and transported him to a secluded location. There, he was confined with approximately ten other captives.

Despite the dire circumstances, the pastor maintained his faith. He recited Psalms 23 and 118, sang hymns, and prayed aloud, offering spiritual comfort to his fellow captives.

“They tried to make me stop singing and praying, but I could not remain silent,” he said.

Around midnight, one of the kidnappers attempted to execute him.

“I was on my knees, and the gun was pointed at my head,” he recalled. “I closed my eyes and thanked God for my ministry and my family, accepting whatever happened. But the gun misfired three times, and confusion arose among the kidnappers.”

The pastor said that disagreements among the captors led to his release early on September 3.

“Some wanted me dead, others wanted to demand ransom, and others suggested letting me go. In the end, they released me near Pétion-Ville and told me to call my family,” he said.

The incident highlights the growing threat of kidnappings in Haiti, particularly targeting religious leaders and institutions. According to the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti, between April and June 2025, at least 185 kidnappings were reported, with many victims being held for ransom.

The United Nations has expressed alarm over the escalating violence in Haiti, with gangs expanding their control and committing widespread abuses, including kidnappings, killings, and sexual violence.

The pastor emphasized the power of faith in overcoming adversity.

“Even in the darkest hours, God gave me courage, peace, and strength to pray, to sing, and to share His love,” he said. “My faith never wavered. To Him alone be the glory.”
