On February 1, 2025, the Adventist community center in Gunzenhausen, Germany, along with the newly established “Wolkenflitzer” daycare center, was officially inaugurated in a celebratory service. The event, held under the theme “You are important. We are here.”, marked a significant milestone in the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s commitment to social welfare and early childhood education.

According to the Advent Welfare Association (AWW)—the social welfare organization of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Germany and the provider of the daycare center—this theme reflects its core mission of providing care and support where it is needed most.

A Celebration of Partnership and Purpose

The “Wolkenflitzer” daycare center officially opened its doors on December 6, and its dedication ceremony gathered distinguished guests, including representatives from the city of Gunzenhausen, the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Bavaria, the local Adventist congregation, the South German Building Association (which oversees the Church’s real estate in southern Germany), and the AWW leadership. Parents, children, and teachers from the daycare were also present, reinforcing the facility’s role as a hub for community engagement.

A Message of Service and Community

In his sermon, Wolfgang Dorn, President of the Adventist Church in Bavaria, reflected on Jesus’ parable of the leaven, emphasizing how everyone has the opportunity to make a positive impact in their community. He highlighted the importance of churches serving as spaces of both devotion and vibrant community life, describing the new center as a harmonious blend of spiritual reflection and the joyful activity of a daycare center.

Volkmar Proschwitz, Executive Chairman of the AWW, acknowledged the extensive discussions and collaboration with the city, emphasizing the spirit of partnership and goodwill that contributed to the success of this project.

Gunzenhausen Mayor Karl-Heinz Fitz expressed his appreciation for the new daycare, noting that its opening was an important step in addressing the region’s growing demand for early childhood education facilities. He also recognized ongoing efforts to expand daycare availability across the district.

About the “Wolkenflitzer” Daycare Center

The AWW-operated facility provides care for a total of 62 children, offering 12 crèche places for infants and 50 daycare places for older children, distributed across three care groups. The daycare spans 670 square meters over two floors, designed to accommodate a nurturing learning environment. Additionally, the center features a spacious 600-square-meter outdoor playground, allowing children ample room for physical activity and exploration.

The total construction cost of the daycare center amounted to €4.6 million. The Free State of Bavaria contributed €1.8 million, while the City of Gunzenhausen provided €1 million toward the project. The remaining funds were raised through a joint effort by the South German Building Association, the Adventist Church, and the AWW, ensuring the project’s successful completion.

The AWW expressed its hope that the new community center and daycare will serve as a dynamic space for both children and the broader community. In a statement, the organization highlighted the role of churches as places that foster connection, belonging, and support for all generations.

Advent Welfare Association (AWW): A Legacy of Social Service

Founded in 1897 in Hamburg, the Advent Welfare Association (AWW) has played a crucial role in the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s social initiatives in Germany for more than a century. The organization operates various social service programs, including daycare centers, a special education daycare facility, and an addiction counseling and treatment center. It also runs an overnight shelter for homeless women, providing essential support to those in need.

Beyond these core services, the AWW is the primary shareholder of several non-profit organizations that manage elderly care homes, hospices, and residential facilities for individuals with disabilities. The organization also supports a school and multiple programs aimed at assisting refugees and promoting social integration. Additionally, the AWW oversees volunteer-led initiatives, such as self-help groups for individuals struggling with addiction.

With the opening of the Gunzenhausen community center and “Wolkenflitzer” daycare, the Adventist Church and AWW reaffirm their commitment to serving families, fostering early childhood education, and strengthening communities through faith-driven social engagement.
