The transition from victim to survivor often requires both courage and sustained support. ADRA Romania highlighted this reality through the story of Irina, a mother of four living with a visual impairment who sought safety after years of abuse.

According to ADRA Romania, Irina experienced 18 years of domestic violence that included physical, psychological, financial, and cyber abuse. She ultimately found refuge through Casa ADRA, the organization’s Emergency Reception Center for Victims of Domestic Violence, which provides temporary shelter and reintegration services for women and children fleeing unsafe environments.

Long-term support for women and children

ADRA Romania reports that since Casa ADRA began operating in 2009, the organization has assisted more than 4,026 victims. This includes providing shelter to 1,199 mothers and children. ADRA Romania operates as a licensed social service provider under Romania’s Ministry of Labor, with a focus on helping survivors rebuild their lives and move toward long-term stability.

A holistic approach to reintegration

Casa ADRA’s support model combines immediate protection with services aimed at social reintegration. ADRA Romania said the center helps beneficiaries access legal and medical assistance, including guidance related to divorce, custody, and urgent health needs. Survivors also receive specialized psychological counseling to address long-term trauma—support that extends to both mothers and children.

The center also prioritizes pathways toward independence. ADRA Romania reported that services include professional development opportunities and educational support. In Irina’s case, the organization said she is pursuing vocational training in massage therapy as a step toward financial stability.

Mariana Roș, a psychologist with ADRA Romania, said survivors like Irina often demonstrate significant resilience as they work to rebuild dignity and create safer futures for their children.
