In the wake of the powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Hinatuan on December 2, 2023, the aftermath continues to unfold as the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOLCS) reports an alarming count of 1,700 ongoing aftershocks. The Municipality of Hinatuan has declared a state of calamity, responding to the urgent need for assistance as 237,798 individuals, comprising 56,634 families, grapple with the aftermath of the disaster.

ADRA Philippines' Emergency Response Team (ERT) has swiftly joined forces with the local government and the local mission to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the damages and requirements of the affected families. The collaboration aims to address the immediate needs of those distressed and displaced by the earthquake.

The ADRA family is urged to extend their support through prayers for the ERT and families, especially women, children, and other vulnerable individuals affected by the catastrophe. One poignant manifestation of the impact on the youngest survivors comes from the evacuation centers, where children are expressing their experiences through art, shedding light on the human stories behind the stark statistics.

Reflecting on this creative activity, it becomes evident that each person reflects a unique narrative, emphasizing that there are people and families behind the numbers. As the world responds to the crisis in Hinatuan, it is essential to recognize and address the individual stories, especially those of the children who have undergone distressing experiences.

ADRA's ERT remains on high alert, closely monitoring and assessing the evolving situation in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, where the earthquake's epicenter struck on that fateful December day. The organization is committed to providing aid and support to the affected families and communities as they embark on the challenging journey of recovery and rebuilding.
