When disasters strike, every second counts, and so does preparation. Recently, the ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency) headquarters in Europe brought together 25 humanitarian professionals from 11 European countries for an intensive Emergency Response Team (ERT) training in Slovakia’s High Tatras mountains.

Though regionally based, the training contributes to ADRA’s global network of rapid response teams, ensuring that skilled personnel are ready to respond with speed, compassion, and coordination when crises occur, whether in Europe or elsewhere.

The week-long program, held in May 2025, combined classroom instruction with a full-scale disaster simulation. Participants worked under pressure to coordinate a humanitarian response in a fictional scenario involving a vulnerable Roma community, an experience designed to replicate the realities of an emergency setting.

Training Rooted in Experience

ADRA invited experienced colleagues from Ukraine, Syria, and Lebanon to join the training and offer insights from ongoing humanitarian crises. Their firsthand accounts helped inform the scenario and allowed participants to plan and implement a response that meets international standards.

Throughout the simulation, teams were challenged to manage logistics, establish coordination systems, and deliver aid—just as they would in an actual disaster response. ADRA trainers and technical experts closely monitored and evaluated their efforts.

Participants who successfully complete the training will be invited to join ADRA Europe’s Regional Roster, a deployable team equipped to respond to humanitarian emergencies in Europe and beyond.

Building Capacity Across the Continent

ADRA maintains offices in 31 countries across Europe and is committed to strengthening local capacity for disaster preparedness and response. This includes developing national emergency plans, pre-approved funding mechanisms, and a regional incident management system to ensure timely and coordinated action in future emergencies.

The ERT training is part of ADRA’s broader global commitment to humanitarian readiness. By equipping its staff with the tools, frameworks, and experience needed to act quickly and collaboratively, ADRA strengthens its ability to serve communities in crisis, wherever the need arises.

As the training concluded, organizers reaffirmed that saving lives tomorrow begins with being prepared today.
