A mobile classroom initiative in Serbia is bringing education directly to nearly 200 Roma children, many of whom struggle to attend school due to remote locations and inadequate living conditions.

The School on Wheels project, led by ADRA Serbia, the humanitarian arm of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, has served children from marginalized communities for whom access to formal education remains a significant barrier.

There are approximately 250,000 Roma people living in Serbia, many of whom have faced generational poverty. According to ADRA Switzerland, one of the project’s partners, helping Roma children successfully complete their education is a proven way to break the cycle of poverty, prevent further marginalization, and enable a path to a better future.

The initiative features a specially equipped trailer that functions as a mobile classroom. It is pulled by a bus, which also serves as transportation to ADRA Serbia’s community center, where children participate in creative workshops.

These educational and recreational activities not only provide learning opportunities but also help keep children safe and engaged, reducing the likelihood that they spend time on the streets.

The School on Wheels project is a year-long initiative scheduled to conclude in May 2025. Over the course of the project, 200 Roma children have benefited from mobile and center-based instruction. The project is a joint effort made possible by several partner organizations, including the TX Foundation, DJ Rey Foundation, ADRA Serbia, and ADRA Switzerland.
