The Adventist Development and Relief Agency International will host its “Light the Way Home” candlelight vigil to commemorate the United Nations’ World Refugee Day on Friday, June 20 at 8 p.m. The event will feature Christian recording artist Alison Brook.

The vigil will take place at the Seventh-day Adventist Church world headquarters, located at 12501 Old Columbia Pike, Silver Spring, MD, USA.

The event is open to the public, and ADRA welcomes anyone who would like to attend and bring awareness to the needs of refugees.

There are an estimated 15 million displaced men, women and accompanied children who have been forced out of their homes and across borders to avoid persecution and brutal violence. Often refugees struggle to survive outside of their home countries. Today, refugees in regions surrounding South Sudan and Central African Republic are preparing to face the most devastating famine the world has seen in 25 years. The rainy season is approaching and threatens to destroy what is left of the region’s crops. In addition to refugees, there are more than 33 million internally displaced persons taking refuge within their own countries.

Through its “Light the Way Home” candlelight vigil, ADRA hopes to shed light on the issue of refugees and help raise $1 million to respond to their urgent needs with food, clean and safe water, hygiene provisions, health care, and other resources.

For churches and other organizations interested in holding their own candlelight vigil for refugees, resources are available for download at adra.org/refugeeday or by emailing vilasheree(at)adra.org.
