“Youth should use the knowledge derived from institutions like Bugema University to develop countries in the region,” former Kenyan president Daniel arap Moi told graduates of Bugema University, a Seventh-day Adventist institution, on Sept. 20.

Moi, who spent 50 years involved with his nation’s politics, was the commencement speaker at Bugema, where 250 of the 416 graduates were from Kenya.

In his address, former president Moi saluted Bugema University’s founders for devising a philosophy which emphasized a balance between what one feels in their heart, thinks in their head, and does with their hands.  This common approach to life and social relations will make a difference in interaction with others from different backgrounds, he said.

“Education is essential in the development of every individual and the development of a nation.  There can never be sustainable development without a properly educated population,” Moi said.

Turning to the graduates, Moi appealed to them to have self-discipline, inspired by their Christian education.

Among the dignitaries who attended was Pastor John L. Wani, chancellor of Bugema University and president of the Adventist Church in Uganda; Simon Mayende, Uganda’s minister of state for higher education; vice chancellors from several Ugandan universities, as well as from Baraton University in Kenya Dr. Hudson E. Kibuuk; education director for the Adventist Church in East-Central Africa and local district officials, led by Al-Haji Abdu Nadduli, who was one of the graduates.

Bugema University has an enrollment of 1,555 students who come from 10 countries across the African continent and beyond.
