Even before activity begins in the streets, José Oliveira is already preparing for the day. He checks a small sound system, adjusts his tricycle, and sets off on another route through the city. At 75 years old and known locally as “Mamão,” he has turned his means of transportation into a mobile platform for sharing Christian messages.

Adapted and equipped with a portable speaker, the bicycle broadcasts the programming of Radio Nuevo Tiempo, the Christian television and radio network in South America, as Oliveira travels through the streets. He lives in Ananindeua, in the metropolitan region of Belém, in the state of Pará in northern Brazil.

Oliveira often stops in busy areas such as the Icuí neighborhood and at Canteiro Central do Paar, where the city’s largest open-air market operates. In these locations, hundreds of people hear the programming transmitted from FM 106.3.

“I’m very well-known, and I do this with great pleasure. For a long time, I promoted things that weren’t edifying, but today I’m a messenger of the Truth,” he says.

Residents often recognize his voice before he turns the corner. Some greet him, others smile, and some come to their doors to listen briefly to the broadcast.

Seventh-day Adventist for 25 years, Oliveira also distributes pamphlets and offers Bible studies to people who express interest.

A national survey released in 2025 identified the medium as the most trusted in Brazil, with 81% credibility, according to the Credibilidade das Mídias study by the Ponto Map agency in conjunction with V-Tracker.

A message that reaches far

Radio Nuevo Tiempo Belém has a potential reach of approximately 4.1 million people across 43 municipalities. Its programming presence has expanded across the region in recent years.

Church leaders attribute part of this growth to the federal government’s Amazônia Legal project, which granted 12 repeater stations in the state of Pará. With these additions, the Belém station now functions as a distribution hub for programming transmitted to other cities.

“Every day we receive stories from listeners talking about the importance of radio in their lives. That excites us; it makes us see that radio has brought relief, answers, meaning, joy, and hope, because, above all, it carries the Word of God,” says Alinic Teles, supervisor of Radio Nuevo Tiempo Belém.

Radio Nuevo Tiempo transforms lives

The first broadcast station in Pará went on air on August 21, 2025, in Santarém, on the FM 98.1 frequency. Even with only a few months of operation, impactful stories are already emerging, such as that of Rosineide Linhares, who began her Bible studies by listening to the programming.

“The radio is my daily companion. While I make lunch or take care of my father-in-law, I learn about God, and my heart is at peace. I love all the programs, and I'm already influencing my family. Here, the radio is always on; it never stops,” she says. “I want to express my heartfelt gratitude because, through the radio, which has been a blessing in my life, I've tried to find answers, and with its help, I'm studying the Bible,” she concludes.

The expansion also has the support of the Angels of Hope missionary project and the Church's administrative headquarters in the region. The Altamira broadcast station is already in the testing phase.

“We are preaching the gospel 24 hours a day. We do this through dynamic programming, with information, music, news, and messages to strengthen health and spiritual life. And we will continue to carry the voice of hope until everyone hears it,” emphasizes supervisor Alinic Teles, who hosts the daily program Bom Dia Novo Tempo (Good Morning Novo Tempo).

While the new antennas are being installed, Oliveira remains faithful to his mission. Through radio transmitters, and sometimes through a speaker on a bicycle, the message continues reaching communities across northern Brazil.
