The BBC Essex Make a Difference Awards celebrates exceptional individuals across Essex, England. On September 6, Jayden Melius, an 11-year-old attendee of Balham Seventh-day Adventist Church and long-standing member of United Children and Youth (UCY), received the Young Hero Award.

Melius, who has been part of UCY since the age of four, was recognized for his commitment to serving his community. He volunteers at his local care home, spending his free time engaging residents, many of whom live with dementia, through artwork, games, meaningful conversation, and music. A self‑taught musician, Melius regularly plays the piano and sings for residents, bringing comfort, joy, and connection through his gift.

Beyond the care home, Melius dedicates time to picking up litter in his local park, demonstrating his desire to care for the environment and his neighborhood. Earlier this year, he participated in a Swimathon, raising more than £500 (US$677) for Cancer Research UK.

Melius is not only a community volunteer but also a budding young preacher and musician within the Seventh-day Adventist Church. His spiritual growth, leadership qualities, and commitment to service have been evident from a young age, said Balham Seventh-day Adventist Church members. Those who have watched him grow, including UCY leaders, described him as a natural light, trendsetter, and an inspiration to his peers.

Craige Young, director of UCY, expressed great pride while witnessing Melius receive the award.

“Seeing Jayden honored in this way reaffirms the mission of UCY—to create, empower, and grow young people who make a meaningful difference in their sphere. I’ve known Jayden since he was four years old, and even then, it was clear he was destined to shine. His impact today is a testament to what happens when young people are nurtured, encouraged, and given space to lead.”
