The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Romania, in partnership with ADRA Malawi and the Matandani SDA Mission, recently completed a major humanitarian initiative in Neno, Malawi, by providing vital medical infrastructure, food relief, and social support to 2,289 vulnerable individuals.

Through the "Support a Child in Africa" project, a specialized team of nine Romanian volunteer professionals, including dentists, engineers, and technicians, established the first permanent dental clinic on the Matandani Adventist Mission campus. Fully funded by private partners and volunteers, the €70,000 (about US$80,000) multi-year project invested over €40,000 (around US$46,000) into this single mission to deliver long-overdue oral healthcare to local residents.

The initiative brought the first permanent dental clinic to the area. It is fully equipped and has already treated more than 170 patients, many of whom received dental care for the first time in their lives. More than 3.6 tons of food and hygiene kits were distributed to 405 families (totaling 2,289 beneficiaries) in surrounding communities. Additionally, extended aid to the 800 students attending Matandani's campus institutions addressed severe nutritional and material shortages that hindered learning.

In a country where 75% of the population lives below the poverty line and one of every three people lack access to clean water, basic health services, and consistent nutrition remain out of reach for most, many children walk up to an hour each way to attend school on empty stomachs.

"True solidarity means offering support where the need is greatest," stated Robert Georgescu, executive director of ADRA Romania. "Through free dental services and essential aid, we managed to turn a dream into reality for both the local community and our medical team."

Local health leaders welcomed the project's long-term sustainability. James Waile Phiri, head of the Matandani Clinic, noted that the facility solves an urgent regional health gap, saving residents from traveling up to 100 kilometers (62.14 miles) for basic dental procedures.

ADRA Romania's next objective under the "Support a Child in Africa" project is to fund a daily hot meal program for 480 students at the Matandani campus, ensuring vulnerable children receive the necessary nutrition to remain in school and build a better future.
