The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is working to help families affected by the flooding and landslides in northern Nepal that occurred on August 26. A team from the organization is in Nuwakot, where the first humanitarian aid materials were delivered to government representatives for distribution.

The shipment includes kits for installing temporary shelters and water purifiers. The items will go to families affected by the flood that began in Rasuwa and advanced to other regions of the country.

The delivery of shelter kits and purifiers addresses initial needs confirmed on-site. Assistance is also expected to reach communities in Rasuwa and Dhading districts, but destroyed roads and bridges continue to hinder the delivery of supplies.

It is estimated that some 93,000 people may have been affected. At the time of this report, more than 1,000 deaths have been registered, and more than 4,400 people have been reported missing. Homes, roads, bridges, health centers, and power generation projects were also affected.

The ADRA team sent to Nuwakot is assessing the conditions of the communities and defining the response in conjunction with government officials and other humanitarian organizations.

Based on the initial information collected, ADRA Nepal activated its National Emergency Management Plan. Among the needs identified are shelter, access to clean water, food, and hygiene items.

In Nepal, ADRA is monitoring access conditions and preparing new stages of assistance. In addition to immediate attention, measures to support community recovery and restore basic services are also being evaluated.
