Más pacientes han sido ayudados por un dispositivo innovador para supervivientes de accidentes cerebrovasculares en AdventHealth que en cualquier otro sistema de salud del país. AdventHealth Orlando, en Estados Unidos, es el primer hospital en utilizar el sistema Vivistim® Paired VNS™ para ayudar a 50 pacientes. Este dispositivo transformador, diseñado para ayudar a los supervivientes de accidentes cerebrovasculares en su proceso de rehabilitación, ha demostrado un éxito notable en la mejora de la función de manos y brazos.

Jessica Pflanz estaba celebrando su 30 cumpleaños cuando sufrió un derrame cerebral. Es la 25ª paciente en recibir el implante Vivistim en AdventHealth Orlando, y afirma que le está ayudando a ganar confianza e incluso le ha permitido volver a practicar kayak y paddleboard. 

“Siempre fui muy atlética”, dijo Pflanz. “Gracias a este tratamiento, he recuperado gran parte de mi movilidad. Celebro los logros y cada vez que puedo hacer algo que antes no podía hacer (usando Vivistim)”. 

El sistema Vivistim utiliza la estimulación del nervio vago (ENV) junto con una terapia ocupacional intensa y de alta repetición en AdventHealth Sports Medicine and Rehab para mejorar la eficacia del tratamiento. 

El dispositivo se implanta bajo la piel en la zona superior izquierda del pecho y se conecta al nervio vago, que desempeña un papel crucial en el control de las funciones involuntarias del cuerpo. Durante la terapia de rehabilitación, un transmisor inalámbrico envía señales al dispositivo Vivistim para que emita impulsos suaves mientras el paciente realiza tareas específicas, lo que ayuda a crear o fortalecer las conexiones neuronales. 

“Le da a alguien que ha sufrido un derrame cerebral una segunda oportunidad de tener una buena calidad de vida, algo que es muy importante en medicina”, dijo el Dr. Ravi H. Gandhi, director médico del Instituto de Neurociencia AdventHealth y socio de Orlando Neurosurgery, quien dirigió al equipo para ser el primero en llevar este dispositivo innovador a los supervivientes de derrames cerebrales en el sureste. “Vivistim se centra en permitir que los pacientes recuperen su independencia funcional”.

Una vez que los pacientes han completado el programa intensivo con los terapeutas ocupacionales de AdventHealth, pueden continuar su progreso a través de un programa de terapia autodirigida en casa utilizando un imán para activar el sistema Vivistim a diario. Esta tecnología médica líder puede ofrecer a los pacientes la oportunidad de mejorar su recuperación incluso después de que haya pasado mucho tiempo.
