Some 200 million Christians around the world are suffering for their faith, says a new study to be released in May. Attilio Tamburini, director of Aid to the Church in Need, says that his organization’s annual report tracks acts of intolerance, discrimination, and persecution that Christians endure in different countries. 

According to the report, a total of 165,000 Christians from Egypt, East Timor, Indonesia, India, and Sudan died in religious or ethnic clashes in 2000.  Tamburini also warned that new forms of religious discrimination are emerging in western countries, where countries such as France and Belgium have stepped up investigation and regulation of religious minorities.
