A massive flash flood struck Rasuwa District, Nepal, on August 26. At the time of this report, 157 people have been reported dead, and hundreds more are missing. The flood originated near the Nepal-Tibet border and swept downstream along the Bhote Koshi River, causing widespread damage to communities, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure.

Areas around Timure and Syabrubesi suffered some of the heaviest damage. Floodwaters swept through homes and settlements, damaging hydropower facilities, roads, and bridges. According to Nepalese authorities, the disaster damaged 19 vehicle bridges and approximately 40 kilometers (24.9 miles) of roadway.

The Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force have deployed rescue teams to the affected areas and are continuing search-and-rescue operations. Damaged roads and bridges and disruptions to communication networks have complicated efforts to reach some communities. Hundreds of people, including tourists, hydropower workers, and security personnel, remain missing or out of contact.

Experts are investigating the cause of the flash flood. Some experts say a large ice or glacier collapse in the Tibetan region blocked a river and created a temporary lake that later burst, sending a sudden surge of water downstream. Others have raised the possibility that an earthquake recorded shortly before the flood may have contributed to the collapse, although authorities have not established a direct connection.

At present, no deaths or injuries involving Seventh-day Adventist Church members in Nepal have been reported. However, search-and-rescue operations remain underway, and church leaders are continuing to monitor the situation.

The Northern Asia-Pacific Division has requested prayer for those who have lost family members and homes, the safe recovery of those still missing, and rescue and relief personnel. Additionally, the division has requested prayers for Seventh-day Adventist churches and members as they remain safe and seek opportunities to provide comfort and support to affected communities.

ANN will report further information as it becomes available.
